Meet the Members: 9 Flutists
 


Kimberly Allemang received her degree in Flute Performance from Indiana State University where she studied with Dr. Joyce Wilson. She has been a resident of Raleigh since 1993, taught flute at the Cary School of Music and Meredith College, and serves on the Board of the Raleigh Area Flute Association. She enjoys performing with the orchestra and musical theater groups in the area.

 


Debra Benson is a graduate of the University of Michigan with a degree in Music Education. She received her flute training from Kenneth Scutt and Kenton Terry (Philadelphia Orchestra), Judith Bentley, Keith Bryan (University of Michigan) and John Solum (Vassar College). She teaches private flute in her home studio in Cary.

 


Irene Burke received her Bachelor of Music degree after attending S.U.N.Y. at Stony Brook (N.Y.) and the Crane School of Music. Her flute teachers were Samuel Baron and Donald McDonald. A Port Jefferson, New York native, she currently resides in Wake Forest where she operates her own CPA firm. She also performs regularly with the Raleigh Little Theatre musicals. She also plays piccolo with both the Durham Symphony Orchestra and the Raleigh Symphony Orchestra, and is Executive Director of the latter.

 


Kim Kittner, a native of Seattle, Washington, received her flute instruction from Scott Goff and Felix Skowronek. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Washington and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Southern California. She resides in Raleigh and is employed by the City of Raleigh as an Operations Analyst.

Cathy Lafffoon is a graduate of East Carolina University with a degree in Music Education. Some of her flute teachers include Mark Thomas and Beatrice Chauncey. She has
performed with the Cape Fear Valley Orchestra and Tar River Orchestra. She has recently moved back to North Carolina from Franklin, Tennessee, where she performed with the Nashville Flute Choir. She and her family reside in Pittsboro

 


Thomas Mease was raised in Des Moines, Iowa and currently lives in Apex. He earned a Bachelor of Music in Flute and a Bachelor of Music Education from Drake University and a Master of Music in Woodwinds at East Carolina University. His primary flute teachers include Nathan Jones and Beatrice Chauncey. He is a member of the Raleigh Symphony Orchestra. He was a band director in North Carolina and now earns a living as an administrative officer for NC Cooperative Extension Service in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University.

 


Ann Pearce grew up in Raleigh, studied with Mark Thomas and Earl Slocum, and earned a Bachelor of Arts from UNC at Chapel Hill and a Masters from Duke Divinity School. She was the private flute instructor at Saint Mary's School for twenty years and has been the Handbell Choir Director for Highland United Methodist Church since 1987. In addition to being a co-founder of both the Raleigh Flute Choir and the Raleigh Area Flute Association, she composes and arranges pieces for flute choir, many of which have received awards from the National Flute Association's Newly Published Music Competition.

 


Rosene Rohrer is a Lancaster, Pennsylvania native who graduated from Millersville University in Music Education and then studied with Timothy Day. She is a co-founder of both the Raleigh Flute Choir and the Raleigh Area Flute Association and has served as President of the latter since 1986. She performs in a flute/guitar duo with her husband and in local musical theater orchestras. Also, she teaches privately and leads music and worship at the Raleigh Mennonite Church.

 

Tammy Schmidt is a native of Orlando, Florida where she was a long-time student of Ellen Hinkle. She attended Western Carolina University and received a Bachelor of Arts in flute performance while studying with Eldred Spell. She has worked in various aspects of music publishing, and does music engraving for publishers and multiple composers and arrangers. She is currently the Arts Department Chair and Band Director at Northern Granville Middle School in Oxford, NC.
