Teacher Statement: I enjoy teaching students of all levels and ages; I've taught students as young as six and as old as eighty! Lessons are taught in my home studio, which creates a comfortable, easy-going environment for students. I believe in a well-rounded musical education. Lessons focus on tone studies, scales, etudes and other fundamentals, as well as solo repertoire, duets, and sightreading, with some theory and history in the mix, as well, to help the student place what they are playing into a historical and theoretical context. I don't expect my students to all want to be professionals, but I do encourage them to approach their lessons with curiosity and a desire to learn and improve, as well as the realization that improvement takes consistent practice throughout the week. I encourage participation in all-county and all-district auditions as well as other area contests and ensembles. I tailor my lessons to fit the student, and for those considering a musical career, I can offer a more rigorous lesson format. I have a lot of orchestral experience, and am a current substitute with the North Carolina Symphony.

Her lessons combine music history, theory, and ear training with traditional flute technique and repertoire studies to create skilled flutists that are also well-rounded musicians. As an orchestral flutist she was chosen as resident and soloist at Roanoke Festival Park and was also selected for a European touring orchestra. She has performed in a variety of chamber music groups, including a flute and guitar duo, string trio, woodwind quintet, and even a local lounge band. In addition to studio teaching, she continues to freelance throughout North Carolina as a chamber musician and enjoys all styles of music. When she is away from her studio, Elena can be found leading early childhood music and movement classes throughout the Triangle.

Wednesday afternoons at The Raleigh Music Academy in North Raleigh
Availability: Currently accepting students. I teach Monday thru Saturday.
      Levels:
    • Students taught from age six through adult.
    • In addition, I teach beginning piano and guitar.
    • AND I have other musicians working out of the same location, so  there are even more musical options you can explore!
Teacher Statement: I enjoy working with students of all ages and levels! I start students off with music and teaching methods that are custom-fit for each student's individual needs. I love continuing to learn new methods myself and hope to influence my students in their musical endeavors. There is always more to learn and the journey is focused on individual progress rather than perfection! Students also have the opportunity to play in recitals and small ensembles (duets, trios, quartets, etc.) for retirement homes and/or community events.
Background/Experience: Bachelor of Music, The NC School of the Arts (Philip Dunigan, flute professor); additional study with Robert Dike, Don Adcock, Mary Boone, Leone Buyse and Rebecca Troxler. Independent Studio Instructor since 1996.

    Levels:

I teach primarily intermediate to advanced students, though I do accept well motivated beginners, especially adults. I am also available for short term festival and competition preparation, studio masterclasses and semi-private lessons.

    Teacher Statement:

I stress the fundamentals of flute playing, and the vital necessity of practicing creatively. My approach is cognitive, engaging the student in a creative dialog in order to lead her/him to their own discoveries.

My methodologies are sometimes unconventional, but centered squarely tonally and philosophically within the legacy of Paul Taffanel, Phillipe Gaubert and Marcel Moyse.

Because of the nature of my teaching, my students must be fluent in English.

Background/Experience: There is an extensive biographical sketch on my website, as well as sound recordings of my playing. I have been teaching flute, on and off, for more than thirty years.
Specialties: I am a published composer. 18th century performance practice, contemporary techniques, pre-Boehm flutes, and (non-jazz) improvisation are a few of my specialties. I am eager to engage my students in these areas, but primarily I encourage them to discover their own.
