About Us
The Second Winds is a group that was formed many years ago for the purpose of giving adult amateur players support, encouragement, and experience playing in a friendly setting.
Our members' playing abilities range from beginning level to advanced, and we range in age from about college age to people in their 70's.
At a typical meeting, we will have four to eight people present. We have had as many as twelve and as few as two. Attendance is not required, but we're happy when people come as regularly as they can. The meetings last about an hour and a half.
You will find that this group is one of the friendliest, most welcoming, informative, compassionate groups of people you have ever encountered. Come and try us out! If for any reason this turns out not to be the group for you, you're under no obligation to continue.
Do we rehearse as a group?
No, the Second Winds is not a flute choir, and we do not perform in public as a group. We do warm up together at our meetings, though, sightreading music that is easy and fun. Then those who have prepared pieces take turns playing individually.
Is it mandatory that people play solos?
No - absolutely not! We have members who have never played alone before the group. We do encourage individual playing, though, because there is no better way to start conquering that performance anxiety so many of us deal with. Some folks prefer to play prepared duets with a partner - a good idea!
Is there a fee to join?
There is no fee involved except being a member of the Raleigh Area Flute Association (RAFA).
Meetings
We meet at 2:00 p.m. every other month in the parlor at the St. Philip Lutheran Church, 7304 Falls of the Neuse Road, just across the street from the Ravenscroft School athletic fields (there is a stoplight there).
